Leadership Expert Liz Wiseman to Keynote RootsTech Innovator Summit

Salt Lake City, Utah, November 8, 2016 - Do you multiply or diminish intelligence? Liz Wiseman, a leadership strategist, best-selling author, and inspiring speaker whose recent clients include Disney, Microsoft, eBay and PayPal, Google, and Facebook, is excited to share highlights of what she has learned as the keynote speaker for the 2017 Innovator Summit at RootsTech. Innovator Summit is a one-day event for developers, entrepreneurs, and innovators who want to explore business and technological opportunities in the multi-billion dollar family history industry. The Innovator Summit will be held on February 8, 2017 at the Salt Palace Convention Center in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Liz Wiseman teaches leadership to executives and emerging leaders around the world. She is the founder and president of the Wiseman Group, a leadership research and development firm headquartered in Silicon Valley. She has been listed on the biennial Thinkers50 ranking for 2013 and 2015 and named one of the top 10 leadership thinkers in the world.

Wiseman is the author of three best-selling books: Rookie Smarts: Why Learning Beats Knowing in the New Game of Work; Multipliers: How the Best Leaders Make Everyone Smarter; and The Multiplier Effect: Tapping the Genius Inside Our Schools.

She has spent years working around a lot of really smart executives in tech industries and conducted significant research in the field of leadership. She's observed how some leaders actually shut down the brain power of people around them.

"Yet, other leaders seem to amplify the intelligence of people around them," said Wiseman. "These leaders were intelligence multipliers." She said that “when these leaders walked into a room, it was as if you could see light bulbs going off over people’s heads, and ideas flowed and problems got solved.”

Wiseman has emphasized that one of the most important aspects that she learned in this research was “that when we linger too long on a plateau a little part of us dies inside. But when we step out of the space of knowing—where we are fully capable—and step into unfamiliar territory, we feel alive. I think it is actually where we feel divine, and, in some ways, I feel like it is where we see God’s hand working in our lives.”

Wiseman is a frequent lecturer at BYU, Stanford University, and the Naval Postgraduate Academy. She is a former executive at Oracle Corporation, where she worked over the course of 17 years as the vice president of Oracle University and as the global leader for human resource development. During her tenure at Oracle, she led several major global initiatives and has worked and traveled in over 40 countries. She writes for Harvard Business Review and Fortune. Her work has appeared in The Wall Street Journal, Fast Company, Entrepreneur, Inc., and Time.

The RootsTech Innovator Summit keynote session begins at 9:00 a.m., followed by a full day of classes, the semifinal round of the RootsTech Innovator Showdown, a networking social, and other related activities.

The annual Innovator Showdown contest is designed to foster innovation in the family history industry. Ten semi-finalists will be chosen and announced, with $100,000 in cash and in-kind prizes offered by sponsors to the winners.

RootsTech 2016: Innovator Summit: Entrepreneurship: Validation Precedes the Money

John Richards - Photo from UVU Press Release
This class is called: Entrepreneurship: Validation Precedes the Money and the speaker was John Richards, CEO of Startup Ignition.

This is part of the class overview: "Are you launching your startup correctly? Many entrepreneurs with a great idea for the family history/genealogy industry are still practicing entrepreneurship the old-fashioned way, which is coming up with an idea, raising money, building a product, and then finding no one wants the product."

Here are some of my takeaways from this session:

The old model was planning and product based:

  • Business Plan
  • Product Development Model
  • Gather Money
  • Staff Divisional Roles

The new model is learning and customer based:

  • Rapid Cycles
  • Frugality
  • Experimentation
  • Identify
  • Validate
  • Iterate
  • Looping Scientific Method

We are seeing a metamorphosis of entrepreneurship due to: economy, internet capabilities, internet sub-culture, dramatically lower startup costs, and the sophistication of all players.

Recommended books that every entrepreneur needs to read:

Alexander Osterwalder, Business Model Generation: A Handbook for Visionaries, Game Changers, and Challengers, 9780470876411

Steve Blank, The Startup Owner's Manual: The Step-By-Step Guide for Building a Great Company, 9780984999309

Eric Ries, The Lean Startup: How Today's Entrepreneurs Use Continuous Innovation to Create Radically Successful Businesses, 9780307887894

Nathan R. Furr, Nail It then Scale It: The Entrepreneur's Guide to Creating and Managing Breakthrough Innovation, 9780983723608

A startup exists to search for an unknown but viable business model, not to develop a known product.

Customer development has to be the first priority.

Check out this software: https://www.compass.co/

The #1 cause of startup failure is premature scaling.

Customer Development captures how startups should iterate and pivot to a viable business model. Listen to customers for what they really need and identify their #1 problem that needs to be fixed.
Get customers first ... then build product.

Don't do business plans for startups. Instead utilize a business model.

What is a business model?

  • Create, Delivers, and Captures Value
  • Dynamic
  • Model ... then Plan
  • Facts are with Real Customers

Business Model Canvas http://www.alexandercowan.com/business-model-canvas-templates/

  • Customer Segments
  • Value Propositions
  • Channels
  • Customer Relationships
  • Revenue Streams
  • Key Activities
  • Key Resources
  • Key Partnerships
  • Cost Structure

I love this kind of class. It applies to anyone with creative ideas.

  • What is Your Financial Business Model?

Our mission is to connect the researchers of the world in one global community.

There are two sides to the community, those who are seeking help with their research, and the experts who are willing to find, or fulfill the request. When a request is posted, it is submitted to our community for the helpers to scan and find jobs that are within their areas of expertise. The experts submit a proposal along with a fair price to begin the work. Once the helper has been selected and the proposal approved, the transaction is completed through AncestorCloud.

AncestorCloud was brought to life by a small team of genealogy and technology nerds located in the heart of the Rocky Mountains, in Provo Utah.

From Surgery to Health

I typically try to release a blog post by Tuesday of each week and at least another post by the weekend. This past Tuesday I was having surgery and with the lingering effects of the anesthesia and the pain medication, I was in no condition to write anything. In a phone call with my mother, I was lamenting my condition and that I wasn't able to write a blog post and my brain was so foggy, what would I even write about.

She suggested that I write about my surgery and tie it into family history. She made me promise to not post any pictures from my surgery. So, you get to miss out on the bruised incision and the awesome pictures from the laparoscope. My husband also missed taking pictures of me as I came out of surgery and was freezing in reaction from the anesthesia; I was bundled up in a big pile of blankets.

So, now that you have a mental picture of me in a big bundle of blankets, let me tell you a little bit about my surgery. I had laparoscopic surgery to remove ovarian cysts; 20-30 per ovary. I have PCOS - Polycystic Ovary Syndrome. It is where a woman's hormones get out of balance for reasons that aren't well understood. One hormone change then triggers another hormone change, which can trigger more hormone changes. It can cause infertility, depression, irregular periods, extra facial hair, weight gain, trouble losing weight, insulin resistance, and over time it can lead to more serious issues such as diabetes and heart disease. The cause of PCOS is not fully understood, but genetics may be a factor. I had a similar surgery ten years ago when we were struggling with infertility.

My mother suggested that I write in my journal about this operation and my condition. As I thought about some of my other health issues: asthma, allergies, high blood pressure, etc., I pondered over what health issues I may have received genetically, passed down through the generations and what health issues were environmental, based on my own poor choices.

That got me thinking about this blog and also what kind of medical information have I seen in my family history research. Occasionally in some journal/diary entries I have seen health information. But mostly I have seen health information on death certificates; as cause of death or contributory to death. I am intrigued by what my ancestors' died from. (Collecting death certificates ... another project to add to my list.)

How sad is it that a family learns about a health issue at death? My husband's father died of colon cancer just two months after diagnosis. Now my husband and his siblings have regular colonoscopies. Knowing about family health issues can help us to take better care of our own health. My mother, her mother, and her grandmother all have thyroid issues. Every time I have blood work done I request a checkup on my thyroid levels.

As I laid in bed this week thinking about my health issues, particularly the pictures of the fat the laparoscope revealed cushioning my organs; I resolved to take better care of myself. To get the help I need for nutrition and exercise and management of the illnesses I have. I also resolved to document my health for my family.

As I thought about documenting my health, I remembered a new software program from the RootsTech Innovator Summit. It is called TapGenes. Heather Holmes and Emily Chang have created a Family Health Tree. The software is still in Beta (as of the date of this post) and you can also help with the pre-launch beta test as I have been this past week.

RootsTech 2015 - Day 2 - February 13th

Here are some of my thoughts from my experiences from the second day of RootsTech 2015.

General Session
D. Joshua Taylor, FindMyPast
Family history should not be about searching, it should be about finding. We must continue to lower the barriers to family history; it can become everyone's hobby.

He talked about who inspires him and he shared a story about his ancestor William Heaps and how he found a common thread in the life of his ancestor and himself.  They both love cheese and they both got in trouble for hiding cheese.  Josh hid and ate cheese in his room, while his ancestor William was sentenced to 7 years for stealing cheese!

When Josh had his family tree on the screen, I recognized some of the names in his tree and quickly checked my tree.  Some of William Heaps' descendants married some of William Alvey's descendants.  William Alvey is my 3rd great grandfather.  Josh and I share some common cousins.

Laura Bush, Former First Lady of the United States
She shared that both her and George's parents have shown them the best way to age.  All we have is the here and now.  Sometimes you have to work hard to recognize yourself. It is the job of every American to take a stand, to step up to his or her own pitcher's mound, to face up to fear and to stand proud.

The last part of the general session was an intimate conversation with Laura Bush and her daughter, Jenna Bush Hager.  Here are some of my favorite parts:

Jenna mentioned that her parents and her grandparents always put family first.  And that George Sr. was babysitting Jenna and her sister Barbara the night before he had a presidential debate.  Jenna asked her mom, "What advice do you have for mothers and grandmothers?" Laura responded, "Savor the moments when they are little … all we know we have is now."

Innovator Challenge Showdown
The final four companies shared their programs/apps with the audience.  Five judges asked the finalists questions.  The audience got to text in their votes for people's choice.

1st Place ($10,000) and the People's Choice ($5,000) went to StoryWorth.  You can check them out at:  https://www.storyworth.com/

2nd Place ($7,000) went to ArgusSearch. You can check them out at: http://www.planet.de/argus_search_en.html

3rd Place ($3,000) went to GenMarketplace. You can check them out at: http://www.genmarketplace.com/

By Small and Simple Things - Stacy Julian
Things have the power to trigger memories.  How do we use these things to become better acquainted with our ancestors so they aren't just names and dates?  Not only can things trigger memories, they can trigger emotions.  As we read through the stories of our ancestors, we should look for at least one thing that we can use to trigger memories of the ancestor.  A "thing" that we can display in our home.  What can we do right now with the people that are living?  You can follow Stacy at: http://www.stacyjulian.com/

Family History Adhesive - Janet Hovorka
Janet mentioned that as a child family history was in the water they drank and the food they ate and the air they breathed. It was in the trips they took … it was their life.  I love this!  This is what I am trying to do with my children. She taught that family history is a parenting tool that we all need to be using and that family dinner time is crucial to the development of children in the family; it is even a stronger predictor of a child's academic success than time spent studying.  Something I need to work more on doing at my home … a specific time for dinner and everyone at the table.  She shared research that is being done all over the world that shows the importance of passing history from one generation to another.  Do we know our intergenerational self?  Three things to remember: 1. It is all in how we present it.  If your family isn't interested, reevaluate your presentation. 2. Start with the interest of the family member. 3. Share with others … what works in your family may work in mine.  You can follow Janet at: http://thechartchick.blogspot.com/

Innovator Summit - RootsTech 2015

Today I attended the Innovator Summit day of RootsTech 2015.   There were many sessions today; as the after lunch sessions were 30 minute classes. Here are some of my thoughts about each session that I attended.

Innovator Summit General Session
Bruce Brand of FamilySearch announced that sometime in 2015 there would be a Family History Start Up Weekend.  I am excited about this.  I have always wanted to participate in one of these events and now there will be one on a subject with which I am deeply familiar.  To see more about what a Start Up Weekend entails, see: http://startupweekend.org/  "Start Up Weekends are 54-hour events where developers, designers, marketers, product managers and startup enthusiasts come together to share ideas, form teams, build products, and launch startups!"  This all happens over 3 days … with basically NO SLEEP.  Not too excited about that part.

Scott Sorensen of Ancestry commented that large organizations tend to struggle with innovation.  They are so big that they hinder the process of rapid response that innovation requires or they have to deliberately concentrate on innovation.

Nathan Furr, author and professor of innovation and entrepreneurship asked "How Do We Manage the Uncertainty of Innovation?"  He shared with us the Innovator's Method: Insight, Problem, Solution, Business Model, Scale It.  And that we often get caught in common traps of missing the surprises, leaping to solutions, building end stage products, and maintaining old business models.  His research is interesting to me.  Check out his website:

I met a nice lady in this session, her name is Nancy Daniels and she is from Tennessee. We attended many of today's sessions together.

Becoming Investment Ready
This was a panel discussion of angel investors with interactive audience participation.  The questions were:
  1. Do investors want audacious ideas of specific market?
  2. What is the importance of unique technology to investors?
  3. What factors most influence investors?
  4. What do investors most what their money spent on?
I have the audience statistical responses and if anyone is really interested in this topic I will email it to you. I found the discussion very intriguing and thought it would apply to an idea that I have in another of my interests.

Innovator Challenge Semi-Final Round
While the audience ate box lunches, the 8 finalists presented short  5 minute overviews of their products. They were asked questions by a panel of judges.  Here is a list of the semi-finalist companies: http://rootstech.org/showdown. The group is now down to 4 and on Friday the winner of the challenge will be selected. I am really intrigued by this company: http://www.genmarketplace.com/. I think they have a great concept and I am very interested in watching their company grow.  Check them out when you get a moment.

Kickstarter: Create the Future
This session was presented by Jimmy Zimmerman of FamilySearch and Mike Davis of StoryPress. I have recently backed a project on Kickstarter and am intrigued by the concept of crowd funding.  Here is the project I backed, if you are interested: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/scottwiser/vanishing-ink-a-novel-with-illustrations. The session today discussed making sure you plan a great PR and SMM campaign to go with the Kickstarter campaign and that sometimes Kickstarter is just a great place to test an idea before putting it into future development.  Success is related to the product and the persona of the presentation of the product.

From 20 to 1.5 Million Downloads - Audience Building Lessons for All Businesses
This session was presented by Lisa Louise Cooke of Genealogy Gems.  You can check out her website here: http://lisalouisecooke.com/.  She said that to build an audience, you have to have a voice about something that matters to your audience.  She discussed 3 key areas to building an audience:
  1. Email: Newsletter
  2. Online: Podcasting, Blogging, YouTube
  3. Social Media: Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest

From Innovation to Strategy to Execution
Tyler Norton of Hero Partners presented this session.  You can check out his company at: http://www.heropartners.com/.  He discussed the 5 steps in turning a good idea into a thriving business.  Here are the 5 steps:
  1. Focus on Core Competencies (Innovation)
  2. Leverage Cores Into Products (Innovation)
  3. One Page 3 Year Strategic Plan (Strategy)
  4. Annual Operating Priorities (Execution)
  5. Quarterly Operating Priorities/Drivers (Execution)
I love strategy and execution.  I really like the concept that "you are not your product".

Market Your Business While You Sleep
Darin Adams from Infusionsoft discussed lifecycle and automated marketing.  He discussed 3 main key points:
  1. Attract: Who is your audience? What attracts their interest? Collecting Leads.
  2. Sell: Education is KEY - people buy when they are ready, not when you are ready. Make sure the offer is clear and concise and close the deal.
  3. Wow: Deliver and WOW the customer. Offer more. Get Referrals.
You can check out Darin's company at www.infusionsoft.com.

Mega Trends In Tech
Greg Collier of FamilySearch shared some of the trends technology is experiencing: Crowd Sourcing, Big Data, Machine Learning, Transparent Computing, Mobile and Social.  In the next 5 years the entire world will be connected.  What does this mean for family history?  The pace of innovation is growing at an unprecedented rate.
